The Beginner’s Mind

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the experts there are few.” - Shunryu Suzuki

When I think of being a beginner, honestly, the first thought I have is how I’ll be perceived not being the best at something. Admittedly not the healthiest thought, and one that has stalled me from starting many things. Eventually, I will my sense of courageousness forward to let that pesky fear of judgement go for the sake of my evolution. Can you relate?

Our minds may try to interfere, but the truth is, you don’t have to be great at something to start. However, you do have to start to become great. In the context of yoga, “greatness” is something that can only be measured against yourself. Yoga is a deeply personal journey of evolution. While there are many ways to practice yoga, both on and off the mat, yoga asana is one branch that the mind might try to talk you out of starting.

“I’m“I’m not flexible enough,” “I’m not strong enough,” “I can’t even touch my toes”—these are common exclamations. Starting something new can be scary, and it's a totally valid feeling. We could discuss all the reasons why yoga is beneficial for your body, heart, and mind, but let's stay focused. We've all been beginners at something, and if you’re like me, it's not always a comfortable position to be in. However, the Zen Buddhist tradition offers a different perspective. Tapping into a beginner’s mind can be incredibly helpful, whether you’re a novice or not.

A beginner’s mind, according to Shunryu Suzuki’s Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind is, “an empty mind that is ready for and open to everything while being absent of self-centered thoughts of achievement.” Applying this outlook to your yoga practice means freeing yourself from expectations and being open, playful, and even surprised. Approach your practice with the curiosity and excitement of a child seeing things for the first time.

Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for years or you’re brand new, there is so much to discover when we allow ourselves to be free from self-imposed expectations. These expectations ultimately limit us. Embracing a beginner's mind opens up a world of possibilities and enriches our journey, both on and off the mat.
